The Birdwatchers’ Field Club of Bangalore
Welcome to BlrBirders!
Our new name reflects a renewed commitment to sharing the joy of birdwatching through inclusive, volunteer-led walks, talks, and community activities. Our goal is to spark curiosity, nurture respect for nature, and encourage stewardship of Bengaluru's wildlife habitats.
Bengaluru's group birdwatching tradition dates back to the late 1970s, inspired by Dr. Joseph George of the Birdwatchers' Field Club of Bangalore. His legacy continues through Bangalore Bird Day, observed each year in his honour.
This group is a space for the birding and nature-loving community of Bangalore to connect, share sightings, and learn from each other.

Rules
A few non-negotiables, to keep this a safe and healthy space for birds and birders alike.
1. No nest photography. Photos of nests, eggs, or chicks in the nest are not allowed, no exceptions. This protects birds from disturbance and discourages practices that put breeding birds at risk.
2. No buying, selling, or trading wildlife. This includes birds, and applies without exception. Anyone found doing this will be permanently removed from the group.
3. No paid event promotions, and no piggybacking on our outings. This group exists for volunteer-led, informal community activities, so please don't use it to advertise ticketed tours, paid workshops, or other commercial birding events. This also means paid activities or groups cannot send their participants to, or otherwise link their activities with, our walks and outings.
4. No forwards, chain messages, or off-topic content. Please save memes, festival greetings, political or religious content, and chain messages for other groups. This keeps the feed useful and on-topic for everyone.
Guidelines
Some friendly pointers to help everyone get the most out of this community.
1. Let's keep it regional. We'd love for posts to relate to Bangalore and its surrounding regions, including neighbouring states. Content from further afield isn't quite the right fit here, there are plenty of excellent Indian, regional and international groups for those!
2. Birds and nature, broadly, are always welcome. Even if something isn't strictly about our region, if it's broadly about birds or nature, or likely to interest birders here (identification tips, conservation news, gear talk, and so on), feel free to share it.
3. This is a wildlife space, not a pets one. Posts about domestic animals aren't a fit here, unless they tie directly into a wildlife topic.
4. A date and location go a long way. When sharing a photo or observation, please include when and where it was seen. Extra context (species, behaviour, habitat, weather) makes your post even more valuable to fellow birders.
5. Label AI-generated images, and credit photographers. If you're sharing an AI-generated image, please mention that clearly. And if you're reposting someone else's photo, do credit the original photographer.
6. Be mindful with sensitive locations. For rare or vulnerable species, active nests, roosts, or rare vagrants, please avoid posting the exact location publicly, as this can draw crowds and disturb the birds. Sharing such details privately, or with an admin, is a great alternative.
7. Be kind. Whether you're just starting out or you've been birding for decades, let's keep discussions warm, courteous, and constructive.
8. When requesting to join, keep your profile visible, and please join as yourself. This helps our admins get to know a little about you before adding you to the group, so do keep your profile unlocked for a bit after requesting to join, and make sure it represents you as an individual rather than a business or page. Thanks so much for understanding, it really helps us keep this community safe.
9. Spot something off? Loop in the admins. If you notice a rule being broken, spam, or anything that concerns you, please tag or message the admins directly rather than calling it out publicly. We're always happy to help.
10. A gentle safety reminder, especially for families. Our group includes members of all ages, including children who join walks with their families. Since we don't know every member personally, please don't assume someone is trustworthy simply because they've reached out through this group. The same care you'd take on any online forum, being thoughtful about sharing personal information or meeting up one-on-one, applies here too. If anything feels off, please reach out to the admins.
